Locals invited to get involved in their woodland

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is looking for willing helpers from the Mount Vernon and Broomhouse areas in Glasgow to join the Greenoakhill Volunteer Group.

The new group, which will meet on the second Tuesday of every month, will give local residents opportunities to play a part in helping this urban woodland flourish.

Recently established on a former landfill site by FLS, working in partnership with Patersons of Greenoakhill, the woodland is an urban oasis that also includes wildflower meadows and a 6km network of paths.

FLS Community Ranger, Jo Young, said;

“Reclamation of this site will be an ongoing project and the Volunteers Group is a great way for local people to get involved.

“We’ll be litter picking, clearing away tree tubes and cutting back vegetation and carrying our wildlife surveys and there are  bound to be other activities in the months ahead.

“As well as meeting new people, learning new skills and developing a sense of community ownership, everyone who comes along will enjoy the benefits of a day outdoors in a beautiful green space on the edge of Glasgow.

“Anyone interested can just turn up on the day – but seeing as we’ll be providing teas and coffees, it would be helpful if folks could let us know if they plan to attend.”

The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month – the next meeting being on 14th of May – and gathers at the Hamilton Rd car park for a 10am start.

People are advised to dress for the weather, have sturdy footwear and to bring a packed lunch. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
