Local views sought on 10-year plans for two Cowal Peninsula Forests
Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has opened two consultations on Land Management Plans that map out proposals for two forests on the Cowal Peninsula for the next 10 years.
The consultations are for Glenbranter Forest and Strathlachlan Forest and are a normal part of FLS’ ten-year review of all land management plans to ensure that management options continue to help meet FLS objectives and public expectations.
The new plans for both forests will look to maintain sawlog production for the future; enhance and expand the areas of native broadleaf woodland; and introduce greater resilience in the whole forest, through improved species, age and structural diversity, in the face of increasing threats of pests, diseases and extreme weather events.
New forest roads will also need to be considered as part of the plans with consultation on this necessary infrastructure being undertaken in stages during the coming years.

FLS Planning Forester Jamie Howie said:
“Getting input and ideas from people in the local communities within the area is an essential part of the planning process, helping us develop well-informed and effective plans. So, we’re really keen to hear comments and feedback on the plans.
“Our general aims include to enhance productivity, expand native woodland, minimise the presence and impact of tree diseases and create forests that are more diverse while at the same time improving their conservation value for a wide variety of species.
“We’re also intending to maintain these woodlands’ appeal to visitors and to the local communities.”
FLS will be running a public drop-in session covering both plans on the 19 June from 2pm to 8pm at the Memorial Hall, Strachur, PA27 8DG.

Consultation on the draft plans will be open until 20 July 2025.
