Glenelg coastal path closed after landslide
A large landslide spilling across a Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) forest has forced the closure of the coastal path on the Glenelg peninsula between Totaig and Glenelg.
Warning signs are in place and FLS is urging people to stay away for public safety reasons with the area still unstable.
The path is used to access the Iron Age broch of Caisteal Grugaig and the landslide is visible across the loch from Eilean Donan Castle, near Kyle of Lochalsh.
FLS Forest Manager Mike Beveridge said:
“While the landslide has not impacted on any main roads, it has blocked the coastal path around the peninsula. It appears the slide started on neighbouring land and spread down into the FLS forest.
“There has been a lot of heavy rain in the region and there is still a risk that the landslide could continue to shift.
“We have put up signs advising the public that the path is closed due to safety concerns. Anyone thinking of visiting the area or walking the coastal path is being urged to pay attention to the warnings and stay away at this time.”
FLS teams have been on site and will continue to analyse the situation and damage. However, it is anticipated the path will be closed for the foreseeable future.
