FLS and Renfrewshire Council’s Wardens promote responsible dog walking
A spate of recent complaints about dogs has prompted Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) and Renfrewshire Council’s Wardens Service to remind dog owners of their responsibilities.
At some woodland locations where there is a high level of usage both by private and commercial dog walkers, members of the public have complained about dogs running loose, being out of control.
As a result, FLS and the Council’s Warden Service are joining forces to patrol these woodlands and remind people visiting with dogs that they have certain responsibilities.
Amanda Malcom, Community Ranger for FLS said;
“Our woodlands are great places for dogs and their handlers to enjoy a bit of exercise and relaxation.
“Most dog owners and commercial dog walkers are responsible, clean up after their dogs and ensure that their dogs behaviour does not give cause for alarm to others.
“But unfortunately there are some owners and dog handlers who are less aware of the impact that poorly controlled dogs can have on other people.
“Following the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (SOAC) guidelines and taking full responsibility for the dog’s in your charge makes for a better experience for everyone.
“Respect other woodland users, clean up after your animal, keep dogs in sight and under control, and if wildlife or livestock are present, keep your dog on a lead.”
Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Communities and Housing Policy Board, said:
“It’s so important that owners stay in control of their dogs while out walking and always ensure that they pick up after them too.
“Our woodlands are key parts of the local community and we want to ensure that they are inviting places for people to visit, so please be a responsible dog owner, respect others using the woodlands who may not be comfortable around dogs, and ensure that you pick up after your pet every time.”
The next joint patrol will take place in August at Boden Boo, Erskine.
